Canada Day 2025: Honouring the Land and Strengthening Community Through Hockey

Jul. 01, 2025

This Canada Day, Hockey NWT proudly acknowledges the lands we live, play, and grow on, the traditional and ancestral territories of the Dene, Métis, and Inuit Peoples of the Northwest Territories. These lands have long been places of gathering, movement, and tradition. As we celebrate Canada, we also pause to honor the deep histories and vibrant cultures that continue to shape our northern communities.

Hockey is more than a game in the North. It’s part of the fabric of life, a place where youth learn confidence, where families come together, and where lifelong friendships are built. From outdoor rinks and community arenas to tournaments and tryouts, hockey brings us together in ways that go beyond the scoreboard.

At Hockey NWT, we believe in the power of sport to strengthen community, bridge cultures, and inspire the next generation. That means making space for everyone, across all communities, ages, and identities, to feel welcome, supported, and proud to call the North home.

As we reflect on where we’ve come from and where we’re going, we remain committed to growing the game with respect, humility, and heart. To the players, parents, coaches, officials, volunteers, and Elders who keep hockey thriving across the NWT, thank you. You are the heartbeat of this game.

From all of us at Hockey NWT, let’s keep skating forward, together.
